As a Senior Software Engineer II at Smartsheet, you will create the next generation of our platform while tackling meaningful distributed systems challenges alongside a talented engineering team. You will collaborate closely with product managers and fellow engineers through code reviews and architectural discussions, and you will have the opportunity to mentor other engineers. This role is a great fit for someone with a strong background in hands-on development as well as solid technical leadership experience.

About the Billing & Subscriptions Team

The Billing & Subscriptions team is at the heart of Smartsheet’s growth engine. We are responsible for the critical systems that power Licensing and Monetization. Our mission is to build a seamless purchasing experience that supports millions of users and enables the business to rapidly evolve its product and AI offerings at scale.

You Will

  • Contribute to Smartsheet’s most critically visible initiatives into FY28.
  • Build scalable back-end services for the next generation of applications at Smartsheet using Kotlin and Java.
  • Solve challenging distributed systems problems and work with modern cloud infrastructure such as AWS and Kubernetes.
  • Lead code reviews and architectural discussions as you work with other software engineers and product managers.
  • Be a force-multiplying team lead at the helm of our most important work.
  • Mentor other engineers on code quality and other industry best practices.
  • Forge a strong partnership with product management and other key areas of the business.
  • Actively use AI tools to improve personal and team efficiency across coding, testing, design, and troubleshooting, while exploring AI integration opportunities within team processes and features and coaching others on effective AI use.
  • Promote best practices, even beyond the immediate team.

You Have

  • 7+ years of software development experience building highly scalable, highly available applications.
  • 7+ years of programming experience with full-stack technologies such as Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript.
  • 3+ years of experience with cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure.
  • 1+ year of professional experience leveraging AI to improve personal productivity while building complex SaaS feature sets.
  • Experience developing, documenting, and supporting REST APIs.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong critical-thinking capabilities with the ability to solve complex problems and independently clarify vaguely defined tasks with stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a collaborative spirit.
  • Conviction for doing the right things the right way, with a history of championing those practices.
  • Curiosity to understand existing systems and boldness to pioneer next-generation ones.
  • Legal eligibility to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with MySQL or other relational databases, focusing on performance and scalability.
  • Experience with NoSQL or DynamoDB databases.
  • Experience with Snowflake or Databricks.
  • Familiarity with container orchestration platforms such as ECS.
  • Experience improving large-scale event processing systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Kinesis, Kafka, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with stream processing frameworks such as Flink, Spark, or other similar technologies.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

Compensation

Salary: $175,000 – $245,000 USD per year

Smartsheet provides a competitive base salary range for roles that may be hired in different geographic areas where the company is licensed to operate. Actual compensation is determined by several factors, including professional and educational experience, skills, and specific candidate location.

This role will also be eligible for a market-competitive incentive opportunity.
